Penguin Book Cover Designs

These are my two final designs for the 'Penguin Book Cover' brief. We had to design two different book covers that represents the book '100 years of Solitude' written by Gabriel García Márquez.

I wanted to express the theme of identity, as this was a main theme in the book. Another theme was the birds, which is how the gypsies found the Macondo village. I incorporated both these themes in my design.

100 Years of Solitude -Conventional Layout

I was also asked to produce a conventional text layout for '100 Years of Solitude' written by Gabriel García Márquez.

For this design, I wanted to relate it back to the fact that this book was translated from Spanish to English. Therefore, this book is a two way book.  English is on one side of the page, but if you turn the book upside down, you can read it from the back in Spanish.

100 Years of Solitude -Unconventional Layout

I was asked to produce a unconventional text layout for '100 Years of Solitude' written by Gabriel García Márquez.

I found the book was quite easy to read to begin with, then gradually became more and more confusing. this layout is a metaphor for how I personally found the book whilst reading it.
