Postcard Book | Women Inventors

For the other part of the final major project brief, I decided to create a postcard book. The postcards can be cut off to be sent with details of the woman and her invention, but you can also keep the book after the postcards have been used which also tells you about the women and their inventions.

The Zig-Zag sewing machine stitch

Did you know that the Zig-Zag stitch was invented by Helen Augusta Blanchard? (1840 - 1922) she is one of many inventors that have not been recognised for their brilliant invention. Here is a fold out material broadsheet dedicated to her and her invention.

Women Inventors | FMP

For my final major project, I had to create a 32 page book/booklet on our chosen theme for International Women's Day (8th March 2011) I chose to do mine on Women Inventors, as they are often overlooked despite inventing some of the most influential inventions that we still use today.

Giving Bees a new home.

Last night, I took my parents to collect some honey bees which had swarmed on a woman's tree. My parents boxed them up to give the a new home in one of their already-built hives.

This morning we got up to put them in, and here are the steps to building a hive ready for the bees.

All the hives

Me in my suit

Mother in her suit

A mesh floor is placed on a crate

Then a brood box is placed on the mesh floor

Wax frame foundations are put in to give the bees a little help with starting to build its honeycomb

These are placed in one by one

End boards are placed in to contain the wax frame foundations

A wooden crown board is then placed on top

...followed by the roof

My Father then attaches the ramp to allow the bees to gradually walk into the hive

The bees are placed and unravelled

The bees gradually walk into the hive

The bees then walk into their new home.

ISTD | Nineteen Gardens: Nineteen Memories

For this project, I had to create either a screen-based or a print based piece. I knew that I wanted to do print-based instantly.  I chose the brief 'Not just fleurons'. (Fleurons are decorative elements in typography, but can also been seen on things like pastry when cooking) Fleurons also relate back to the garden so I chose to create a very personal book on my memories in gardens. I was nineteen years old when I created this book, and so I thought it would be appropriate to have nineteen little short stories.
